Bread Crumbs

Remember that whole-wheat bread from the American Woman’s Cookbook? After day 2 it got a little on the dry side as preservative-free breads are apt to do. Fret not because we are going to turn that fabulous bread into even more fabulous bread crumbs!

Homemade Bread Crumbs

  • Total Time: 35 minutes

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 300°. Slice your bread into ¼ inch slices and arrange them on a baking sheet in a single layer. Place them on the middle rack in the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes on each side. After 30 minutes take the sheet out and test the bread for doneness. It should be completely dry and snap or crumble.
Place crisp bread into a food processor and process until they are medium crumbs. I like to keep them a little larger initially because I can always make them finer depending on what I need.

I also made the leftover Potato Bread into delicious bread crumbs!

What to do with them now that you have them? How about this recipe or this one? You could make beautiful, thick halibut fillets crusted with potato breadcrumbs and drizzled with beurre blanc to make a flavorful, elegant dinner! This Old Fashioned Macaroni and Cheese recipe which is gooey and cheesy inside and has a crunchy buttered breadcrumb topping. One bite of this family recipe is not enough! Or, flavorful, moist Ricotta Meatballs that are perfect for meatball subs, pasta, a passed hors d’oeuvre, or even a meatball stroganoff. Yeah, I said it. You’re welcome 😄 You could also make Stuffed Peppers which are a surprisingly easy meal wrapped in one tidy package! These are flavorful, the pepper is perfectly cooked, and the sauce is to die for!
